This study project investigates cases that challenge main stream Gricean models of communication. Specifically, we look at non-cooperative language use, for example how speakers mislead and how politicians communicate vaguely to conceal questionable pieces of information. We will start by discussing theoretical frameworks to model dialog. Then we go through experimental studies that test the role of loopholes in communication. Students will learn to carry out their own web-based experiments on political language use, analyze the data and write up the results. Students should have basic skills in experimenting and linguistics. A prerequisite is that students have a taken a class from the Psycholinguistics/Neurolinguistics group before such as the Introduction to Psycholinguistics or Psychosemantics. It is possible for new students to enter the course in the second half (as an interdisciplinary course) but not in the first semester.

In addition to weekly meetings, we will have further consultation hours in smaller groups.
