Beschreibung

Asexuality is a sexual orientation characterized by a lack of the kind of sexual attraction or desire towards others that is usually supposed to accompany loving relationships. In recent years, the study of asexuality has emerged as a vital area of exploration within fields such as philosophy, psychology, or sociology. This interdisciplinary seminar aims at a better understanding of the emotional experiences of individuals who identify as asexual. We will examine how asexuality is being conceptualized and understood across different disciplines, highlighting the challenges and nuances in defining and studying the lived experiences of asexual individuals, shedding light on the complexities of their emotional landscapes and related issues, such as: How do they navigate a world that often equates sexuality with identity? What are the emotional implications of living outside societal norms of sexual desire and attraction?

Philosophically, we will engage with philosophical inquiries into desire, pleasure, and identity, questioning traditional assumptions about the centrality of sexual desire to human experience. How do asexual individuals construct their identities in a society that often privileges sexual attraction? How do they form relationships, both romantic and platonic?

Throughout the course, students will be encouraged to engage critically with the readings, participate in discussions, and develop their own perspectives on the topics at hand. By fostering an interdisciplinary approach, this course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of asexuality and its emotional dimensions, while also encouraging them to think creatively and critically.
