Im 18. Jahrhundert, dem Jahrhundert der Aufklärung, bildeten sich politische und ethische Konzepte, Werte und Ideale heraus, die auch heute noch von zentraler Bedeutung sind: so insbesondere die Konzepte allgemeiner Menschen- und Bürgerrechte und Vorstellungen von der Freiheit und Gleichheit aller Menschen, aber auch Ideale der Autonomie sowie der Authentizität. Zur Entwicklung und kontroversen Diskussion dieser Ideen trugen in nicht geringem Maße auch literarische Texte wie Romane, Dramen, Fabeln und Gedichte bei, denn für viele Autor:innen des 18. Jahrhunderts war es selbstverständlich, dass auch die Dichtung zur moralischen Erziehung der Individuen wie zur Verbesserung der sozialen und politischen Verhältnisse beitragen sollte. Die Vorlesung soll einen Überblick über die Auseinandersetzung mit politischen und ethischen Themen in der Literatur des 18. Jahrhunderts bieten. Dabei sollen auch neuere Debatten der Forschung aufgegriffen werden, die sich darum drehen, wie konsequent die Aufklärer bei der Verfechtung ihrer Ideale von Gleichheit und Freiheit waren bzw. wie viele Widersprüche und Grenzen sich zeigen, wenn man auf ihre Position zur Demokratie oder zur Gleichberechtigung der Geschlechter oder auf ihre Konzeptualisierung von Rassen achtet.
Die Vorlesung wird per Livestream übertragen und über Opencast aufgezeichnet.
Für die Studienleistung muss eine Klausur (45 Minuten) geschrieben und bestanden werden.
