Der Essay ist eine nicht-fiktionale Gattung, die sich nicht den drei Großgattungen von Lyrik, Epik und Dramatik zuordnen lässt und deren Zugehörigkeit zur Literatur deshalb zeitweilig umstritten war. Manchmal wird der Essay auch als eine Gattung im Gebiet zwischen Literatur, Wissenschaft und Publizistik betrachtet. Zugleich ist er aber auch als eine der „Leitformen innovativer Literatur in der Neuzeit“ (Heinz Schlaffer) bezeichnet worden. Als Begründer der Gattung gelten Michel de Montaigne und Francis Bacon, deren "Essais" bzw. "Essays" im späten 16. Jahrhundert erschienen. In die deutsche Literatur wurde die Gattungsbezeichnung 'Essay' erst in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts eingeführt. Die sich anschließende Entwicklung der Gattung ist durch eine Vielzahl von Formen und Funktionalisierungen geprägt: Der Essay wurde für Reflexionen über Literatur und für die Popularisierung der Wissenschaft genutzt, für die Pflege kultureller Traditionen und für Stellungnahmen zur aktuellen Politik. In dem Seminar werden wir anhand exemplarischer Texte die Geschichte der Gattung vom späteren 19. bis zur Gegenwart verfolgen und dabei sowohl Schreibverfahren als auch soziale, kulturelle und mediale Kontexte der Essays analysieren.
