Beschreibung
The course will focus on reading and discussing various writings from the revolutionary and republican period in U.S.-American literature, embracing non-fiction, fiction, but also essays, diaries, and other forms of writings. Authors will range from Cotton Mather, Benjamin Franklin, Phillis Wheatley to Susanna Rowson and Charles Brockden Brown. The full list of readings will be presented in the first session of the course, it will include excerpts as well as full versions of shorter works.
The seminar course is designed as a companion to the lecture course on American Literature and Culture between 1700–1830 "Revolution, Republic, Nation." Students may take both courses for a full V-LK module in the B.A. programs. Students in other programs may inquire about their options at the beginning of the semester.
Students are required to carefully read and do background research on the material. In addition, students will have to prepare and present some of their readings and background research for class discussions. Readings and research will form the basis for the written paper / report for those who need graded credits (as required by the module description).
